NI TANJUNG EXHIBITION

Don't miss the "Ni Tanjung" exhibition, from September 2 to December 31, 2026, at the Art Brut Museum in Montpellier. Ni Tanjung (1930-2020) was a self-taught Balinese artist who embodied both local classical art and international contemporary art. Her work, developed over nearly twenty years, became globally recognized thanks to the discerning eye of Georges Breguet, a Swiss anthropologist who knew from their first meeting that he was facing an extraordinary talent. Ni Tanjung was a phenomenon of rare uniqueness, as nothing about her was conventional: neither her personality nor her creations. In 2004, while strolling, Georges Breguet stumbled upon an old Balinese woman singing and dancing in front of a wall of smiling stones arranged in height. She behaved as if she were in front of a temple, in the midst of a votive ceremony. In 2006, the year of her peak, the installation brought together several hundred stones. Later, it was dismantled. Its material destruction is, paradoxically, the origin of its entry into the Indonesian and international art world. In her room, surrounded by her assemblages, her drawings, and her dolls, she celebrated her power. In total, over 1,000 assemblages in less than 10 years!
