MOHAMED LEKLETI IN DISBALANCE

The exhibition, the first of its kind in France for this Moroccan artist living in Montpellier, consists of a large mural created on-site and several drawings on paper that complement it to form a cohesive whole. This ensemble is connected by drawn or real threads, more or less visible. It features all the graphic and iconographic vocabulary of the artist: targets and circular machines, microphones, numbers and mathematical formulas, stormy clouds, breaths, images of war, children's games, hands, hybrid bodies (notably human/animal), twin or tense bodies, duplications of faces (Janus figures), migrants or men of power. His work is primarily constructed from black and white, although some of his compositions sometimes incorporate touches of color, materials, or collages. He employs various techniques: charcoal, graphite, ink, acrylic, pastel, photography, digital printing, sewing, or even textile elements. He also knows how to occupy space, particularly through his use of objects: resin sculptures, stuffed birds (referencing the Canticle of the Birds by Farîd-ud-Dîn ‘Attâr), ancestral property titles from Morocco engraved in wood, wigs, African masks, or prayer rugs. While the artist uses only the walls of the gallery as a support, the installation gives the illusion of floating, as if each image or object is suspended in weightlessness, in a fragile and precarious balance/imbalance, where neither men nor women, nor animals nor objects touch the ground. This is why the exhibition is titled In Disbalance. For Mohamed Lekleti, the celestial world embraces the earthly world, the eternal and the factual touch, the timeless and the moment, the past and the present are one.
